Elements of Speech

Langage is something around an idea.

There is the aspect of preservation.
Once you have an idea in your mind, you may want to hold on to that idea,
either to preserve this idea to come back to it at a future point of time,
or to convey this idea to another person.

Language is more than preservation or conveyance of an idea.

Language is more than that,
language carries emotion.

Strange as it may seem,
it is as if emotions keep ideas alive,
not only stop ideas from fading away,
but give nourishment to further development.

Same as emotions are never constant,
changes in emotion cause changes in ideas.
You may return to an emotion by returning to the idea.
You may return to an idea by returning to the same emotion.

Language is more than emotion.

There is the aspect of sound,
rhythm, intonation, phonemes, 
(the sound of consonants and vowels)

Language is more than the spoken word.

There is the aspect of form,
letters of the alphabet or pictograms as in Chinese.


Language is more than the written word.

Language is closely connected with 
the modern means of conveyance.

Let's look at some actual experience.


If you want somebody to share your experience
you take him to the place where you yourself
made that experience.

You take your friens to the river
and make him bathe in the water.

Once you share an experience
there is no need for further explanation.

To entice your friend to come along with you
you might rejoice and dance.
Body language would help you
persuade your friend.

If any mutual agreement had been reached
on the meaning of sounds and the spoken word
you might tell your friend what to do
and where to go.

If any understanding on the meaning of letters
and written words had been reached
you might send your friend a written message.

In the present-day highly-industrialized world
your written language may be sent by letter (handwritten,
typed, printed), by fax, by e-mail.

Your e-mail may contain words 
printed in different colors,
images, sounds, spoken words,
music, TV-sequences.

The transfer of your message may be delayed
(such as in the mid of night) 
or may be live
even allowing for interaction
of the partners.

As far as Mr Honey's dictionaries
are concerned,

we will allow the typing-in
of searchwords,
that is,
STRINGS or sequences of letters
to be searched for in the data base.

We will further allow
for simple search instructions

"-"  minus sign instead of a word
     to indicate NEGATIVE SEARCH

(search for all lines that do not contain 
the instring of the subsequentsearch)
which is equal to logic  AND NOT)

"+"  plus sign instead of a word
     to indicate search in a further
     searchword.

(search for all lines that contain
     either the first searchword
     or the second searchword
     or maybe both searchwords)

"z" for zoom
     to indicate a search
     in the last search results
